Lombardy/Veneto Day 13 – Chioggia, Pellestrina, Lido, Jesola

Today we have 3 lots of ferry crossings so after enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel because it was included, we head off. First ferry is just opposite our well placed hotel and not too busy. We land at the thin strip of land being Pellestrina Island and first cycle south to the Ca Roman nature reserve. Unfortunately with our bikes and packs we can’t go into the reserve, but what an amazing ride there along the narrow rock stone dam walls. We return to the small village of Pellestrina which is so colorful and picturesque. Bikes seem to be the main mode of transport in addition. Today the locals are practising for the annual boat race in August on their gondola like boats. Each team has their own colors and the boats are individually wheeled across the road and then craned into the water.

So relaxing to watch but we reluctantly have to move on to ensure we get onto the next 2 ferries without too many delays. We find the bike path to Santa Maria del Mare, although at one stage blocked by a road machine so not sure if we will have to detour.

At the next ferry, we had trouble buying a ticket at the automated machine and weren’t sure if we could buy on board. The very kind ticket inspector smiled and waved us on without a ticket. Such kindness. A short journey to Alberoni on the Lido-Pellestrina. Easy to find the waterside cycleway which we follow for quite a few kms and then some quieter roads to Lido San Nicolo. Not as pretty as Pellestrina, more touristy. After checking the timetable for our next ferry we have time to ride around and check out the beaches. The usual Italian resort type areas that are always over busy so we head back to have some lunch near the ferry. Very surreal riding along the Lagoon side with Venice and its distinctive buildings and domes showing just over the water. Our ferry crosses over the busy Venetia waterway with all boating traffic in and out of Venice.

From our landing at Punta Sabbioni it is a nice easy flat ride to Jesola which is our stop for the night. Most of the time we are on cycleways alongside the waterways of the Venetia Lagoon. We stay at a lovely Bed and breakfast. There is also a restaurant on site which offers a Seafood tasting menu with local delicacies. It has a very good review so it is nice to stay in and then just go downstairs for dinner tonight. It has been a big day even if not necessarily lots of kms of cycling. The best and friendliest restaurant with the owner’s son in law being the chef.
